Reported Speech : là thuật lại lời nói, có hai kiểu trực tiếp và gián tiếp
direct speech = trích dẫn lại chính xác đặt trong dấu nháy kép: Paul said "I'm feeling ill"indirect speech = trích dẫn lại chính xác đặt trong dấu nháy kép: Paul said that he was feeling ill.Sử dụng Reported Speech động từ chính của câu thường ở quá khử (Paul said that ..
I told her that ... etc.) và phần còn lại cũng thường ở quá khứ

said that he was feeling ill.⇒ I
(có thể bỏ told Lisa that I didn't have any money.that)
Với Reported Speech các thì
Hiện tại chuyển sang Quá khứ, thì quá khứ thì để nguyên hoặc chuyển sang quá khứ khoàn thành.am/is --> was are --> were do/does --> did will --> would have/has --> had can --> could want/like/know/go ... --> wanted/ liked/ knew/ went ...
⇒ Paul said 'I woke up feeling ill, so I didn't go to work.'
⇒ Paul said (that) he woke up feeling ill, so he didn't go to work.
⇒ Paul said (that) he had woken up feeling ill, so he hadn't gone to work.
Nếu sự việc vẫn còn đúng không nhất thiết phải chuyển sang quá khứ ở Reported Speech:
Paul said 'My new job

tell/ask sombody to do something để đặt câu yêu cầu, mệnh lệnh
